A specification for formatting non-text data such as graphics, audio, video and other non-ASCII files so that they can be sent over the Internet. In addition to MIME supported e-mail clients allowing the transmission of non-ASCII files, web browsers also support various MIME types that allow the browser to display or output files that are not in HTML format. MIME also supports messages in character sets other than ASCII. Graphic Interchange Format (GIF) graphics files and PostScript files are two of many predefined MIME types but it possible to also define your own MIME types. MIME was defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force’s (IETF) RFC1590.
