GA - General Audio
By:Bruce Bahlmann
Christine Martz
The component of (MPEG-4) Audio that covers the bitrate range of 16 kbit/s per channel up to bitrates higher than 64 kbit/s per channel. GA quality levels range between better than Amplitude Modulation (AM) up to transparent audio quality can be achieved.

In a GA coder, the input signal is first decomposed into a time/frequency (t/f) spectral representation by using an analysis filterbank, and then subsequently quantized and coded. GA is meant to deal with bitrates of 16kbit/s and higher.

The core part of the MPEG-4 audio GA coder is based on (MPEG-2) (AAC) technology. It is is complemented by a number of additional coding tools. MPEG-4 functionalities like scalability are added and further enhancement in coding performance is achieved.

Other Related Definitions for GA
“…(GA) coder allows the transmission of highquality broadband multichannel signals such as music at bitrates from 16 to 64 kb s channel. This coder is a state of the art, scalable version of well known perceptual compression techniques. It is based on the MPEG 2 Advanced Audio Coding standard with additional improvements in quality and functionality for MPEG 4.” [Scientific Literature Digital Library]

“…The GA coder includes all features of MPEG-2 AAC, plus extensions for improved coding quality at very low bitrates, including the TwinVQ scheme. In addition, embedded coding techniques, where one program is represented by a hierarchical set of coding layers, further extend the capabilities.” [MIT Media Laboratory]

“…MPEG-4 General Audio coding is built around the coder kernel provided by MPEG-2 Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) which is extended by additional coding tools and coder configurations.” [Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits]
