An extensive, layered, feature-rich network architecture developed in 1973 by IBM for its mainframe computers. SNA defined IBM's proprietary connection-oriented, virtual circuit network architecture for terminal/host communication that defines the layered logical structure, formats, protocols, and operational sequences that are used for transmitting information units through networks, as well as controlling the configuration and operation of networks. SNA is a de facto standard that includes a peer-to-peer protocol called Advanced Program to Program Communications (APPC), and is supported by many computer vendors.
